How to Perform an internet search with Google

Step 1

Open “Safari” by tapping on the app icon highlighted below on the left screen. Tap on the search/ address bar at the top of the screen that appears.

   

Step 2

Next, the keyboard will appear. Type in something that you want to search for on the internet, such as ‘local news’, then tap “go” on the keyboard.

Step 3

Your search results will appear on the screen. To visit the websites that appear in the search results, tap on the blue text heading. In the screen below, we see the results when searching for “iphones”.

How to Understand the different types of Search Results

Step 1

When searching in Google, there will be various types of search results that will appear. As seen in the screen below, the initial results that will be listed have “Ad” in the left corner. This means these results are from companies that promote their results to appear first on Google search results.

Step 2

As indicated by the arrow below, you can swipe down to view the other types of search results.

Since we searched for ‘iPhones’, we will also find listings for top iPhone models and pricing. Tapping on one will take us to the website with additional details.

Listed lower on the page, we have common questions based on what we searched for (iPhones) found under ‘People also ask’.

The next section are links to articles about iPhones. Tapping on the blue text will take you to the website to view the entire article. To see the other types of search results, swipe down on the screen with your finger.

Step 3

Next we find a ‘Top Stories’ section, these are links to news reports about what we searched for in Google. To view additional News articles, you can tap on the ‘More News’ button at the bottom.

The next section is for local stores that have iPhones for sale. You can see the location of the stores on the map and listings for the stores below it. If we are interested in viewing more details about a particular store, we would tap on the listing. Tap on the “View All” button to see more local stores.

Step 4

Swiping to the bottom of the search results page, we will find a section called “Related Searches”. This will display similar searches that may be of interest. In this example, specific iPhone models are listed; tapping on them will display search results for them.

Highlighted at the very bottom, are additional pages of search results that are available to view. You can tap on ‘Next’ to view the next page of results or tap directly on a page number.

How to Use the Search Filters

Step 1

Search filters can help narrow down the type of search results you see on Google. These options are found right below the search bar as highlighted in the below screen.

For example, if we wanted to shop for an iPhone, tapping on the ‘Shopping’ filter would display all the iPhone shopping options.

On the left, there are additional options to view shopping options, such as: price range, carrier, color, etc. You can select them by tapping on the check boxes.

Step 2

By tapping on the “Images” button, you are able to view images based on what you are searching for. As indicated by the arrow in the screen below, you can further narrow the results further by tapping on these added filters.

Step 3

By tapping on the “News” button, you are able to view all related news articles based on what you are searching for.

Finally, tap on “More” to view additional filters to apply- such as Maps, Videos, Flights, and Finance.

How to Adjust Search Settings

Step 1

You can review and adjust the Search Settings by tapping on the gear looking button located on the top right side of the screen as highlighted in the below screen.

Step 2

Tap on “Search Settings” in the window that appears next.

Step 3

All the categories for search settings will appear. Here you can review the General Search Settings. As highlighted in the box below, you can also tap Languages to adjust the language that Google is set to, update the appearance of Google (Light or Dark theme), and tap on Help for additional resources from Google. Tap on “Save” at the bottom to return to the main Google search screen.
