Much of what we do with tech devices, requires being online and connected to the internet. The following will guide you through several Best Practices to be better protected against scam attempts while online and using your devices.
This guide will cover how to:
- How to Improve Your Online Account Security
- Be Mindful of Publicly Shared Information
- Secure your sensitive info using Apps & tools
How to Improve Your Online Account Security
Strong Passwords, Two-factor authentication (2FA), and regularly installing available Software/System Updates all help improve your security online.
Using Strong Passwords
A strong password helps:
- Keep your personal information safe
- Protect your emails, files, and other content
- Prevent someone else from getting into your account
Longer passwords are stronger, so make your password at least 12 characters long.
Make sure it’s easy to remember! Here are some ideas to make longer passwords that are easier to remember. Try using:
- Lyrics from a song or poem
- A passage from a book
- An abbreviation- using the first letter of each word in a sentence.
It is also helpful to write down your passwords and keep them in a safe place. Avoid using easily accessible info (like from your social media profile) such as your birthday or a family member’s name. It is also best to not share passwords over text or email.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?
2FA is like having a second lock on your account, apart from your password.
It requires you to provide two different pieces of information to prove that you are the real owner of the account. It's especially helpful to prevent unauthorized access to your account even if someone else gains access to your password.
How does it work?
- You enter your regular password to log in, just like you always do.
- After entering your password, the website or app will ask for something else, like a code sent to your phone through a text message.
- Once you provide this second piece of information (the code from your phone), the website or app knows it's you, and it grants you access to your account.
Below is an example of 2FA when attempting to log into a Google account:
When you think of 2-Factor/ 2-Step Authentication as a second lock on your account, it is an easy choice to ensure you are using this feature on all your important accounts.
Software & System Updates
Here are some top reasons why updates are essential:
- Security: Updates make your computer or phone more secure, protecting you from cyber threats like viruses, malware, and hackers.
- Performance: Updates can also improve how your device works. They may make it faster, smoother, and more stable, giving you a better experience.
- Compatibility: Sometimes, new software or apps won’t work correctly on older versions of the operating system.
Your device will notify you when updates are available. All you have to do is follow the instructions to install them.
How to Be Mindful of Publicly Shared Information
Being mindful of publicly shared information means being careful about what you reveal or show to the world on the internet, especially on social media.
By being cautious about what you share online, you can protect your privacy and stay safe in the digital world.
Here are some things to consider:
- Personal Details: avoid sharing your address, phone number, or full birthdate.
- Privacy Settings: Social media platforms have settings that allow you to control who can see your posts and profile.
- Strangers’ Requests: Be careful about accepting friend requests or connections from people you don’t know in real life. Not everyone online is who they claim to be.
- Password Hints: Avoid sharing password hints or clues online, as they might make it easier for someone to guess your passwords and access your accounts.
- Finally, try Google searching your full name to ensure that no sensitive information appears.
How to Secure your sensitive info using Apps & tools
Just like with security and alarm systems for valuables in the physical world…
there are special apps and tools for protecting sensitive info on your devices in the digital world.
Here are the main types of apps and tools to help keep you protected in different ways:

- Pop-up blockers: prevent annoying & potentially harmful pop-up ads from appearing when you browse the internet.

We recommend conducting thorough research into the protect apps and tools that you select to ensure they are reputable and best match your tech needs.
