Defining important terms to better understand ChatGPT
Ai (Artificial Intelligence)
The development of computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as:
- understanding natural language
- recognizing patterns
- solving complex problems.
Though it may seem a bit science fiction or foreign from reality, there are many ways that AI is used in normal daily functions. Here are some common ways AI is used:
- Speech recognition to help with dictation- speech to text.
- Facial recognition to unlock your smartphone with that feature.
- Recommendations from apps or websites- such as Amazon product recommendations, YouTube's new video suggestions, and Spotify’s new music recommendations.
- Virtual Assistants/agents, such as Alexa, Siri, and other Chatbots. These all understand and respond to voice commands with information.
Chatbots
Chatbots are AI-powered conversational virtual assistants that interact with users through text or voice-based messaging. You may have interacted with one if you have recently:
- Contacted a company's customer service automated support line.
- Booked an appointment online.
- Used a smart speaker (Echo device)
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot created by OpenAI.
It is trained on massive amounts of language data to accurately predict the next word of a sentence. Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) was used to train ChatGPT and allows it to give human-like responses and conversational skills.
How does ChatGPT work?
There are three main steps to understanding how ChatGPT works.
Step 1
It processes input text messages.
In order words, it receives and searches for information based on the message you send- similar to sending a text message to someone and waiting for them to respond.
Step 2
It generates relevant responses based on its training.
This is when ChatGPT provides a response to your message.
Step 3
It engages in interactive conversations with users to provide text-based interactions in a conversational manner.
ChatGPT will reply to follow-up questions or messages you send in a way that sounds like you are talking to another person.
Here is an example conversation with ChatGPT:
How to use ChatGPT
Step 1- Sign up for an account
Visit chat.openai.com or type in ‘chatgpt login’ into Google search bar and click on the search result. This website is available on desktop/laptop computers and on mobile devices.
On the welcome screen, select 'Login'
To create an account, enter your email address and select 'Continue'. There are also options to login using a Google or Microsoft account.
Enter your first name, last name, and date of birth, and select "Continue". Only users 18 years old and up can use ChatGPT.
Next, you will need to enter a mobile phone number to receive a code. This is to better secure your account.
Before you can start using ChatGPT, there will be a few important messages that will appear about using Chat GPT. Please be sure to read each one carefully and select 'Next' and 'Done' on the final one.
Step 2- Sending ChatGPT a message
On the main screen, you will find the message bar near the bottom of the page.
Here are some examples of what you can type:
“Explain quantum computing in simple terms”
“Give me a recipe for classic chili”
“Share a poem about walking in a forest”
“Summarize this article” (paste the link or text)
Below is an example where I messaged ChatGPT to summarize an online article and I included the web address for it. The message I sent is in the top portion of the screen and ChatGPT's response is below it.
Once ChatGPT has responded, you can follow up with additional messages such as:
"Provide a bulleted list" or "What is microbiome?"
Unlike searching on Google, using ChatGPT is similar to have a conversation with another person.
