How to Understand the Cloud
The cloud is a great way to store and save your data, but what is The Cloud? Cloud storage refers to data from software and services that are stored on the Internet, instead of locally on your computer. In other words, you can store data like photos, documents, videos, etc., through the Internet and access it from anywhere.
Older methods of storing data that you may be familiar with include:
- Floppy Disks
- CD-Roms
- USBs
However, these types of data storage were limited in the amount of data that could be stored on them. Additionally, you had to have them with you to access the information, and needed to access a computer.
Using cloud storage has several advantages, including:
- Storing more data than older storage types, such as: floppy discs, CD-ROMs, or hard drives
- You can access your data and information across multiple devices
- Backing up is more secure - no more worries about a disc going bad, spilling something on it, or it getting stolen
There are a variety of popular ways to save your information to the cloud. The three most common ways to save information for free are:
- Google Drive - 15GB for free
- Dropbox - 2 GB for free
- iCloud - 5 GB for free
To access more storage space, you can purchase additional storage for a relatively small monthly or annual fee.The more data you have on your phone, the more cloud storage you’ll need to be able to back up.
With Apple’s iCloud, 5 GB can hold about 1,667 photos, while 50 GB can store about 16,000 photos. As new devices are launched every year, the hardware and quality also improve. This means that things like photos and videos take up more space, so you need more storage.
